About Us
Ben’s Plaice is an award-winning fish and chip shop, located in East Looe. It opened on 7th November 2021, and the business has grown from strength to strength ever since. We are extremely proud to have been awarded a 5 Star Hygiene Rating as we are diligent in our food practices and take cleanliness very seriously.
The Story Behind Ben’s Plaice
I had been visiting the beautiful seaside town of Looe for over 10 years. A close relative owned a few shops in Looe and so I saw first hand, how some of the small businesses crashed and burned once Covid hit in 2020. The old chip shop sadly, never re-opened. After saying multiple times how I would love to take it over and make it a successful venture, I eventually had the courage of my convictions and took the plunge.
Ben’s Plaice opened its doors and we have never looked back. I took a sabbatical from my full-time managerial role in a well-established, well-known retail store and spent 10 months building on the success of our fish and chip shop. It was hard work, but well worth all of the effort. We soon built a core of regular customers in addition to holidaymakers.
The Best Chip Shop in Cornwall 2023
In September 2023, the readers of Cornwall Live voted us in 1st place for the ‘Best Chip Shop in Cornwall!’ This is an impressive feat, as Looe itself has so many fish and chip shops, let alone the whole of the county of Cornwall. In March 2023, we had been voted 2nd. We work hard to achieve our goals and produce the highest quality food for our customers, using the best produce we can source. Our ethos is to provide the best traditional fish and chips, whilst bucking the trend and adding some more modern dishes to appeal to people of all ages and tastes.
We didn’t stop there! In addition to adding numerous weekly specials, we also decided to provide desserts. Our signature brownies are freshly baked on-site, and we offer different flavours each week. Cheesecakes and other desserts often make an appearance on the specials menu, and we have the magnificent FWIP self-serving gelato machine!.
